Gift yourself an early holiday getaway at Boreas Inn

November 30, 2016 by: Drew C. Foster

Don’t wait for Christmas to celebrate the holiday season at Boreas Bed & Breakfast Inn, where our holiday discounts will leave a bit more cash in your pocket for purchasing presents.

We’re kicking off the seasonal celebration a little early here on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula, where the traditions are uniquely coastal and wonderfully whimsical. A crab pot Christmas tree? You’ll find it here. Holiday jazz and B&B tours? They’re both Peninsula favorites! Boreas Bed & Breakfast Inn will be decked out in all its holiday finery throughout December, so head to the Pacific coast to get a jumpstart on this most magical time of year.

Book a stay at Boreas Inn during the first three weeks of December and receive $29 off the nightly room cost each day of your stay.

The holiday season in this corner of the Pacific Northwest is reflective of our proximity to the Pacific. Holiday decorations line wood-shingled roofs, the Bolstad Beach Approach is aglow in holiday lights and downtown Long Beach takes a festive turn. Find gifts for friends and family at the many art galleries, souvenir shops, antique stores and other local retailers up and down the Peninsula, where the vast majority of businesses are locally owned. Dollars spent on the Peninsula say on the Peninsula, and that means you’re helping support the community you love.

And then there are the holiday events.

The fun begins Dec. 3 with the annual lighting of the Crab Pot Christmas Tree at the Port of Ilwaco. Winter marks Dungeness crab season in these parts of the Pacific Northwest, and one of the ways we celebrate the popular crustacean is with what’s billed as the world’s tallest crab pot Christmas tree – a towering stack of commercial crab pots wrapped in holiday lights and festooned with fresh pine cuttings. Enjoy the lighting of the Crab Pot Christmas Tree the evening of Saturday, Dec. 3, as well as caroling and holiday fun along the beautiful Port of Ilwaco.

Speaking of Dungeness crab, the commercial season has faced a slight delay, but should open in December, just in time for you to enjoy local Christmas crab, another Peninsula tradition. And don’t fear the delay – local restaurants and seafood markets are fully stocked with West Coast crab, so you’ll absolutely be able to get your Dungeness fix no matter when you’re in town.

Two wonderful holiday concerts highlight a special mid-December weekend – on Dec. 10 is the annual Tuba Christmas Concert at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, and on Dec. 11 is the Water Music Festival Christmas Concert at the Inn at Harbor Village in Ilwaco.

The free Tuba Christmas Concert features the Astoria Tuba Quartet, a foursome formed in the 1970s with current members playing together since 1997. They’ll travel across the Columbia River to lend the rich sound of tuba to traditional seasonal selections, as well as jazz arrangements and possibly a polka or two. The concert starts at 2 p.m. Arrive early because seating is limited and can fill fast.

A day later, hear traditional jazz vocals and instrumentals at the Water Music Festival Christmas Concert. Performing with two instrumentalists, Seattle jazz vocalist Greta Matassa “brings a marvel of virtuosity to the stage,” says the Water Music Society. Seattle-based nonprofit Earshot Jazz has named Matassa “Northwest Vocalist of the Year” seven times in the past 15 years. Entry is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. The concert is 2-4 p.m.

December 10 and 11 also mark a special weekend here at Boreas Bed & Breakfast Inn. We’ll be participating in the 21st  annual Bed & Breakfast Holiday Open House, where local B&Bs open their doors to the public, offering short tours, tasty bites and holiday décor. And it’s all for a good cause – entry costs a single can of food (or more if you like!), which helps stock the shelves of a local food bank.

Or maybe you just need a beach escape to balance the hectic holidays. Picture this: Multicourse brunches in the morning, beach strolls in the afternoon and evening relaxation in our private spa. Treat yourself to an early Christmas present this holiday season at Boreas Bed & Breakfast Inn.
